Volunteers from the business community play an important role for non-profits. These volunteers help provide guidance, oversight, communication and education about the cause, and most importantly, leadership.

When you are deciding to join the board of a charitable organization, please keep the level of responsibility in mind. This is a chance for you to make a difference in the community and people’s lives, and is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Being a member of the board is not just an opportunity to lend your name to a list, but a chance for community involvement.

To make your volunteer position meaningful, consider the following recommendations:

  • Attend all meetings regularly.
  • Ask questions so you are informed of the organization’s activities.
  • Expand your involvement beyond board activities and participate on other committees.
  • Be aware of the organization’s strategic goals and call attention to them periodically.
  • Communicate the mission of the organization to your friends, peers and relatives to encourage support whenever possible.
  • Be aware of the financial status of the agency.
  • Read all the minutes and correspondence provided to you.
